This week we’ve got Bowie-esque New Wave from Princess Goes, a poignant piano ballad by Raye Zaragoza, jazzy psychedelic soul by Rachel Ana Dobken, Americana and rock hybrids from Lizzie No and James Mastro, and an awesome cover of a rock classic by Fantastic Cat with Butch Walker.

Raye Zaragoza, “On Your Way Home” – This simple yet poignant piano ballad about being there for someone during a difficult time was recently featured on the NBC’s “Found.” L.A singer-songwriter Zaragoza also writes the music for Netflix’s “Spirit Rangers,” a show featuring an all-Native-American writers room and cast. Zaragoza, a woman of mixed Indigenous, Asian and Hispanic heritage, is currently working on the “Peter Pan” theater national tour (which kicks off in February) as Tiger Lily; the production has a revised book that addresses depiction of Native Americans. Her album Hold That Spirit is out now.

Princess Goes, “Come of Age” – If the name rings a bell, it’s been shortened from Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum. If lead singer Michael C. Hall seems familiar, that’s probably because he was the star of “Dexter” and “Six Feet Under.” If he sounds a little like David Bowie to you, well, Bowie himself might agree, as he personally cast Hall as the lead in “Lazarus,” the jukebox musical that played off-Broadway. If the song sounds like lush ’80s synth heaven, that might be ironic, because the genesis of the song lies in a discarded Yamaha synthesizer keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen found on a Brooklyn street. Princess Goes’ new album, also called Come of Age, is out now.

Lizzie No, “Annie Oakley” – A singer-songwriter-guitarist and a talented harpist, Lizzie No is also the co-host of the “Basic Folk” podcast. “Annie Oakley” is a country-tinged road song, about No’s time touring on her own: “I’m counting up my tips/ Is there enough for half a tank?/ Cause little Black girls better move along when the sun goes down in this part of the country,” she sings. The pounding drumming and ecstatic guitar lines are uplifting even as No asks, “Won’t you tell me when it’s time to kill the dream?” I saw No play live last year, and I’m excited for everyone to find out how talented she is when her new album, Halfsies, drops in January.

James Mastro, “Right Words, Wrong Song” – Hoboken, N.J. rock and Americana guitarist James Mastro is a renowned bandleader for the likes of Patti Smith and Ian Hunter, but now he’s taking center stage on his new solo album. Right Words, Wrong Song is about Mastro’s frustrations with the news’ sometimes-questionable slant on the truth. Mastro’s Springsteen-esque voice and killer guitar chops combine with clever lyrics and a hooky chorus to make a winner of a song. Mastro’s solo debut, Dawn of a New Error, is due in February.

Rachel Ana Dobken, “Just a Dream” – This one’s about longing for someone in the aftermath of a breakup. Dobken is practically a one-woman band, singing and playing drums, guitar and piano, as well as producing. There are definite hints of Jeff-Buckley-esque ecstasy in this jazzy, psychedelic track, but she describes her sound as “My Morning Jacket meets Amy Winehouse,” which is also apt. Her new album, Acceptance, is due out next year.

Fantastic Cat featuring Butch Walker, “Band on the Run” – The 50th anniversary of Band on the Run is the perfect time for this awesome cover of the Wings classic by instrument swappers Fantastic Cat. With an assist by producer extraordinaire Butch Walker (P!nk, Matt Nathanson), this version captures the joy of the original along with Fantastic Cat’s own special twist. Watch the video to actually see them switching instruments as they record! I love Macca and I love Walker, so Fantastic Cat found its way straight to my heart with that combo even before I heard these voices harmonize so sweetly.

Rachel’s pick: Princess Goes. I have a friend who’s been nagging me about how great they are for years, so Liane: I’ve seen the light! This song hooked me; it’s transfixing. Let’s go see them play live in January!
