This week we feature the solemn drill of Mozzy, the growing pains of Foster, the carefree flows of The Last Artful, Dodgr, the scandalous lyrics of Kali, the payload of punches from Token and some “bounce” with Dezzy Hollow.

Mozzy featuring Roddy Ricch, “Real Ones” — Mozzy is the newest up-and-coming voice in the drill scene. He joins forces with Compton rapper Roddy Ricch on this emotional track. Rapping over a light piano and electric guitar plucking with trap snares, Mozzy details his experiences surviving living in and getting out of the hood. Even as he leaves his old life behind, he maintains a cautious demeanor.

Foster featuring Kailee Morgue and Zaini, “i tried everything” — The light ukulele and sweet backing vocals bring to mind the sort of hipster-pop rap of Macklemore. Foster raps about the struggle of transitioning to adulthood from one’s teenage years, adapting to new challenges while going to therapy and creating healthy habits. He laments the difficulty of it all, longing for the comfort of youth—but time’s arrow marches forward. Kailee Morgue and Zaini sonically add to the depth of the track.

The Last Artful, Dodgr, “Hullabaloo” — This playful track from L.A. rapper The Last Artful, Dodgr, sees her shaking off the noise from all the buzz around her. She effortlessly glides over this trap instrumental produced by Take A Daytrip, who’s collaborated with the likes of Juice WRLD and Lil Nas X. Light as a feather, she raps, “Flip the bird/ And flew the coup,” as she ascends making a path worth traveling down.

Kali featuring Young Bleu, “UonU” — There’s an ominous and cinematic quality to Kali’s new single, as she supplies the salacious and scandalous circumstances of her relationship with her boyfriend. It’s as toxic as it gets, with both cheating on each other in an attempt to make the other jealous. Certainly an ironic drop just before Valentine’s Day; just hope your significant other isn’t bumping this one without you.

Token featuring J.I.D, “Boom” — This Boston rapper has made quite the name for himself through the underground hip-hop scene, rubbing elbows with the likes of R.A. the Rugged Man and Tech N9ne. The staccato flow rolls smoothly with punchy delivery. Token is spitting alongside J.I.D., as they rap about how unbelievable their lives have become as a result of such success.

Dezzy Hollow featuring WC, “Bounce” — This funky joint certainly delivers on its name. Once the music starts, Dezzy and WC aren’t slouching on flow or lyrics. The song bounces along in perfect time with this G-funk masterpiece. It embodies the SoCal vibe of cruising down the street in your 64, pumping the hydraulics as onlookers stare in awe. Put this song on and just watch as everyone begins to nod along before they get up to get down.

Tim’s pick: This was an extremely tough call to make, but I really gotta split it between both Dezzy Hollow and Token for this week. Both artists delivered with quality bars over ridiculously catchy instrumentals. Dezzy embodied the Southern California freedom of bouncing in a lowrider, while Token flexed his success and backed it up with incredible prose. Something tells me we can expect to see more from both of these cats very soon.
