Following a postponement from this summer to Halloween weekend, Burger Boogaloo appears to be on the move again, this time to July 2021.
“I hope we’ll have the [COVID-19] vaccine available,” event organizer Marc Ribak said. “I don’t think we can really postpone again.”
The two-day festival will now be held July 10 and 11 in Oakland’s Mosswood Park. The lineup remains the same as the one originally announced for July—and then October—of this year. Ribak said it was important for him to deliver the same acts, including Bikini Kill. The group had not played the Bay Area for 25 years, and fans will have to wait an additional year on top of that. Ribak said he’d been trying to get Bikini Kill to play Burger Boogaloo for four or five years.
It took a month to find a summer weekend that worked for all of the artists.
“People were hailing this lineup as the most queer- and trans-friendly we’ve ever had,” Ribak said.
The lineup still includes Shannon Shaw, Bleached, Pansy Division, Younger Lovers, Flipper, Panty Raid, Plastic Bertrand, Carbonas, Alice Bag, the Rubinoos, Midnite Snaxxx, Hammered Satin, The Fevers and Twompsax.
The promoter said he was originally hoping there would be a vaccine available by October, and that he was following the lead of Coachella, which had also originally rescheduled to October. But then Coachella postponed to the spring.
“What it comes down to is having the vaccine,” he said. “We care about the safety of the people attending.”
Initially, it took just two day to get the acts on board and move the event to Halloween weekend; something that many people were excited about. Ribak said he might still try to arrange a Halloween show, if not this year, then next.
