PHOTOS: MARINA delivers “Ancient Dreams” at Masonic tour opener
SAN FRANCISCO — Marking the start of her Ancient Dreams in A Modern Land tour, Marina Diamandis (who goes by MARINA now) brought a sensational pop performance to the Masonic on Wednesday night.
The 36-year-old Wales native kicked off the show with “Ancient Dreams” accompanied by another singer and a five-member band. “Venus Fly Trap,” which followed, was full of electro-pop goodness. “Froot,” the title track of her third studio album, followed and seemed to pump more energy into the room, with fans singing along.
After concluding “Man’s World,” MARINA began playing the notes of fan favorite “Are You Satisfied” on a piano as a slowed-down ballad that has been given recent attention as it has been making the rounds on TikTok.
“I Am Not a Robot” and “Oh No!” from 2010 album The Family Jewels ushered sanctimonious uproar, as did fan favorite “Teen Idle,” “How To Be A Heartbreaker” and “Bubblegum Bitch,”all from 2012’s Electra Heart, which came later in the show.
Taking a moment to catch her breath and address the crowd, Diamandis thanked fans for coming to the tour opener. As she and the band transitioned into “Handmade Heaven,” a four-tired projection of a lit warm orange sunset cascaded in the background. The room grew quiet as MARINA’s rich vocals took center stage.
MARINA concluded her tour opener with a ballad version of “Goodbye.”
Electro-pop singer-songwriter Tove Styrke opened the show with a 10-song set of songs from her 2018 album, Sway. The first songs included the playful “Change My Mind” and “Mistakes.”
The performance had a stripped down theme as she was backed by just one musician rather than a band like at her last Bay Area appearance, several years ago at Hotel Du Nord.
But the two their own, and the Swedish artist’s vocals shined through on tracks like “Hardcore,” “Start Walking” and “Stay.”
Tove Styrke didn’t only entice the crowd with her singing prowess. She put on a show dancing as she moved across the stage. The hot, rhythmic dancing coupled with the bubbly electro-pop music.
“There are panties on the floor. I felt that it was gonna be a good show,” the 29-year-old said.
This led into a cover of ABBA’s “Super Trooper,” which introduced some to her musical influences.
Styrke also performed new single “Show Me Love,” which she said was “really gay” and written for the love of her life.
