SAN FRANCISCO — Three former members of Third Eye Blind performed that band’s self-titled debut album as Xeb in San Francisco Saturday, months after similar attempts were apparently blocked by Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins. The Slim’s show was just the third time original 3eb guitarist Kevin Cadogan, original bassist Arion Salazar and second guitarist Tony Fredianelli publicly performed together since Fredianelli joined the duo. The band was completed by exceptionally talented drummer Javier Torres, who has been playing with Cadogan and Salazar for about a year.
Xeb took the stage at 11 pm and kicked right into album opener “Losing a Whole Year,” which immediately fired up the half-capacity mixed-aged crowd. Many fans sang along with every lyric to each of the songs. Other hits like “Semi-Charmed Life“ and “Jumper“ kept the excitement going, while the deeper album cuts—which the official Third Eye Blind hasn’t touched in years— provided the meat of the show. Fredianelli, serving as admirable lead singer for Xeb, danced, jumped, held hands—and sometimes kissed— diehard 3eb fans. The show closed with a deep cut that didn’t make the album as well as an encore of “Wounded,” and “1000 Julys” off Third Eye Blind’s sophomore album Blue.
The show was opened by singer-writer Sam Johnson and San Jose pop band A Yawn Worth Yelling, whose energetic performance was not too unlike The Mowgli’s with electronic flourishes.
