Kronos Quartet, Meklit, Rep. Barbara Lee to appear at virtual MLK celebration
Bay Area artists like Kronos Quartet, Meklit and Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir will perform Saturday during a livestream celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “In The Name of Love” is co-produced by Bay Area music nonprofit Living Jazz and local concert promoter UnderCover, both run by Lyz Luke. Originally planned as an in-person event at Oakland’s Fox Theater, it’s the 19th annual MLK celebration by Living Jazz and the 10th anniversary show for UnderCover.
The livestream is free, although donations will be accepted.
The lineup includes Branice McKenzie and Bryan Dyer with Glen Pearson, the Living Jazz Children’s Project, Myles Staples, Tory Teasley and The Teasers, Faye Carol, Toshi Reagon and Allison Miller. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) will present, and other guest performers will make appearances. The event will be hosted by sculptor Dana King, a retired KPIX journalist.
The performance will be streamed at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Visit the Living Jazz website to obtain free and sponsor-level tickets to the show.
