PHOTOS: 5 Seconds of Summer rile up young fans at Concord Pavilion

CONCORD, Calif. — New-wave pop band 5 Seconds of Summer made the East Bay the third stop of their current tour on Tuesday, playing at Concord Pavilion.

The Australian quartet opened its set by performing “No Shame” and “Easier,” both from 2020’s Calm. They followed that up with “More” and “Want You Back,” two tracks from 2018’s Youngblood. The band reached back even further in its catalog with “Disconnected,” from its 2014 self-titled debut album, before introducing “Take My Hand,” a new cut from forthcoming fifth album 5SOS5. Later in the set they played two more tunes; “Complete Mess” and “Easy for You to Say.”

Frontman Luke Hemmings, bassist Calum Hood, guitarist Michael Clifford and drummer Ashton Irwin also thew in a cover of The Chainsmokers’ “Who Do You Love.” There was an intense singalong with 5SOS for nearly all 25 or so songs, including during “Ghost of You,” from the 2018’s Youngblood.

They ended the night with hit “Youngblood,” with snippets of The Romantics’ “What I Like About You.”

Pale Waves, Heather Baron-Gracie, Ciara Doran

English dream-pop band Pale Waves preceded the headliners, playing a couple handfuls of guitar-driven synth tunes. Heather Baron-Gracie brought her signature goth punk look to the stage, sporting a knee-high Doc Martens and dark lipstick.

Opening with “Change,” off 2021’s Who Am I, they followed that from “Television Romance” and “Eighteen,” both from 2018’s My Mind Makes Noises. The Manchester quartet concluded with 2021 tune “She’s My Religion.”
